The Local History of Inverell, New South Wales, Australia

Inverell is a town located in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. The town has a rich history, dating back to the 1800s when European settlers first arrived in the area. The local history of Inverell is a fascinating one, full of stories of pioneering, farming, and mining.

Early History

The Kamilaroi people were the first to inhabit the area that is now known as Inverell. The word "Inverell" is thought to come from the Gaelic word for "meeting place." The Aboriginal people of the region were known for their hunting and fishing skills, and they lived off the land for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.

European Settlement

In 1827, the explorer Allan Cunningham arrived in the region and named the area "Green Swamp Plains." The first European settlers arrived in the area in the mid-1800s, lured by the fertile soils and abundant natural resources. The town of Inverell was officially established in 1858.

Farming

Agriculture played a significant role in the development of Inverell. The fertile soils and temperate climate made it an ideal location for farming. Early settlers grew crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as raising sheep and cattle. In the early 1900s, the introduction of irrigation transformed the region into a major producer of fruit and vegetables.

Mining

The discovery of gold in the region in the late 1800s led to a mining boom in Inverell. The town quickly became a hub for mining activity, and many of the local landmarks, such as the Lake Inverell Reserve, were formed as a result of mining operations. The last gold mine in the region closed in the 1950s, but the legacy of mining can still be seen in the town today.
